Description
Widespread throughout the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indo-Pacific, pennant coralfish cruise the ocean eating zooplankton and small vertebrates found in the bottom sediment. In this Spadecaller image a loggerhead sea turtle and the coralfish rendezvous over a seagrass bed.
The loggerhead sea turtle is a marine reptile that inhabits the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. The loggerheads use their massive jaws to rely on a diet consisting of crabs, clams, mussels, and other shellfish that live on the bottom of the ocean.
This oceanic turtle is listed as a threatened species in danger of becoming extinct. While many loggerhead deaths occur due to inadvertent accidents caused by fishing gear, the greatest threat is attributable to the loss of suitable nesting beaches that provide safe areas for their hatchlings to survive. Because these turtles roam vast areas of ocean where their critical nesting beaches are scattered across several countries, international collaboration is imperative to save them from extinction.
