Description
Though the banana plant is conversationally called a tree, it is actually classified as an herb because its thick trunk is made up of tightly clumped leaf stalks. Most tree species have bark.
Evidence shows that bananas were initially bred and grown in the Mekong Delta area of Southeast Asia about 10,000 years ago. Over nine centuries later Spanish explorers brought bananas to the Americas. In the 1800’s, seafarers returning from the Caribbean brought the first banana shoots home to the U.S. Today, yellow bananas are the most widely consumed fruit in the states. In other parts of the world red bananas are more common and popular.
