Description
To make sure the rooster’s crowing travels farther, the rooster finds a strategic place to make sure his presence is known and his calls are heard. Although well-known for their 5 am wake-up calls, roosters crow throughout the day and sometimes throughout the night as well. The rooster’s song also signals to the hens when it is time to wake up and start foraging. Sometimes when a rooster crows, he is sending a notice to other roosters that if they trespass, they're asking for a fight. When the flock’s territory is threatened by a hungry eagle, hawk or owl, the rooster sends out a screeching sound. This screeching alarm is unquestionably different from crowing. In this deadly game of chicken vs hawk, the rooster is a hen’s best advantage – tipping the scale in favor of the flock. The most attentive roosters continue to screech even when the marauder tries to hide in a tree. And, when the danger has finally passed, the rooster crows to let the flock know “all is clear.” His announcement is a confirmation that all is right in the world. “When the Rooster Crows” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 5/23/2022.
