Description
To make sure his presence is known, the rooster finds a strategic spot, where his voice can be heard by friend and foe. Although well-known for their 5 am wake-up calls, roosters crow throughout the day and sometimes throughout the night as well. The rooster’s song has several purposes. It signals to the hens when it is time to wake up and when it is time to start foraging. Their crowing warns other roosters to prepare for a fight, should they dare to trespass. And most importantly, the rooster sends out a screeching sound to alert the flock when a predator, such as a hungry eagle, hawk, or owl is near.
In this deadly game of chicken vs hawk, the rooster is the hen’s best advantage – tipping the scale in favor of the flock. The most attentive roosters continue to screech even when the marauder tries to hide nearby. And, when the danger has finally passed, the rooster crows to let the flock know “all is clear.”
