Description
Cruising gracefully through the sultry air with just two wingbeats per second, the Great White Heron flies slowly but powerfully at about 25 miles an hour. A member of the Heron family, the Great White Heron is also known as the Great Egret, the Common Egret, the Large Egret, the White Egret, and the Great White Egret. In the U.S., the entire territory of Florida is the only state that provides habitat for year-round residents. Nonetheless, its breeding range is expansive, including the U.S. Pacific and Atlantic Coasts, Central America, South America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas, Jamaica, and the Caribbean Islands.
These elegant birds were hunted nearly to extinction for their plumes in the late nineteenth century, which spurred an extensive conservation movement and some of the first laws to protect birds.
“Flight of the Great White Heron” is a hand-painted digital image with modified elements obtained from Frederic Edwin Church’s painting entitled ‘El Rio de Luz’ (1877). This digital image was completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 2/27/2023.
