Description
The Remembrance Day symbolism of the poppy flower originated with a poem written by a World War I brigade surgeon, John McCrae, who was struck by the site of the red flowers growing on a ravaged battlefield. Following the end of the First World War, red poppies were worn in honor of the fallen soldiers. A few years later in 1926 after the introduction of the red poppy, the No More War Movement in the UK introduced the idea of representing all victims of war past and present with a commitment to peace; this was signified by the white poppy. Warfare today impacts civilians. In fact, 90% of all people killed from warfare are now civilians. As Remembrance Day approaches white poppies are worn each year by thousands of people in the UK and beyond. White poppies have been worn in this way for over eighty years.
“The White Poppies of Peace,” is a digital/mixed media painting and composite created by Spadecaller.
