Description
Koi fish have a rich history in Asian culture dating back thousands of years—but are not related to goldfish despite their similar coloration. When the Chinese invaded Japan around 200 BC, Black carp, or Magoi, were introduced into Japan. The Japanese were the first to breed the koi fish, which had natural color mutations. Koi are domesticated Amur carp that are selected or culled for color; they are not a different species and will revert to the original coloration within a few generations if allowed to breed freely. Some Koi can live more than 100 years, though typically, if well cared for, live 20-30 years.
A Koi fish painting with water lilies or lotus flowers are symbols for positive energy, resilience, and abundance in Asian culture. The image of fish is one of the most popular and potent feng shui cures to attract the energy of prosperity.
Koi Fish and Water Lilies is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 11/4/2023.
