Description
The true albino hummingbird is incredibly rare. It has pink eyes, feet, and beak. An Albino Hummingbird has a rare genetic mutation that prevents the formation of any dark pigment. This recessive gene only shows up if the bird inherits the gene from both parents. In addition to the infrequency of both parents carrying the recessive gene, the survival rate of migrating white hummingbirds is very low. It is theorized that the white feathers are much too visible to predators and tend to be brittle, which hinders the strenuous challenge of migration. Consequently, the chances of albino hummingbirds mating are extremely small.
All Hummingbirds are truly a marvel of nature. Their spectacular beauty and interesting behavior is unrivaled. Beating its wings at a rate of 70 times per second, the hummingbird is the only bird that can fly forwards, backwards, upside down and hover in place. Hummingbirds eat twice a day to sustain their incredible energy needs. The hummingbird in this image is feeding on a pink guara flower.
