Description
Native to North America, the fisher is one of the larger members of the Mustelidae, or weasel, family, and is related to mink, otters, badgers and wolverines. They are about the size of a large domestic cat.
The fisher (Pekania pennanti) is a forest-dwelling creature whose range covers much of the boreal forest in Canada to the northern United States.
Although it is not a cat, it is sometimes referred to as a fisher cat. Scooting up and down trees, the fisher is even faster than the gray squirrel. Fishers are predators, and most of their prey are herbivores. Fishers eat mice, porcupines, squirrels, snowshoe hares, birds, and shrews, and sometimes, other carnivores. They may also feed on fruits and berries, such as beechnuts and apples.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, fishers were virtually eliminated from the southern and eastern parts of their range, including most American states and eastern Canada including Nova Scotia. Fur-trapping and loss of forest habitat accounted for their decline. In some areas of North America, such as Michigan, Ontario, New York, and some areas of New England, fisher populations seem to have rebounded in recent years. Fisher populations in the southern Sierra Nevada have been proposed as candidates for protection under the Endangered Species Act.
“Fisher in Boreal Forest” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 12/25/2023.
