Description
The Summer Tanager is a medium-sized American songbird in the Cardinal family. Also known as the "Summer Redbird," this Spadecaller portrait presents the bird perching beside a Virginia Creeper Vine on an old birch tree stump. Every Autumn when the Virginia Creeper’s leaves turn a brilliant red, the birds come to feast on the ripened dark blue berries.
The breeding habitat of the Summer Redbird ranges from the southern United States, the Midwest, and as far north as Iowa. They build their nests usually about 10 to 35 feet above the ground. In September and October, they embark on their long nocturnal migration south to central Mexico, South America, Bolivia, and Brazil.
This is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite that includes background elements from Thomas Moran’s painting, Valley of the Catawissa in Autumn (1862). “Summer Redbird Portrait” was completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 1/24/20244.
