Description
The Ruddy Shelduck is primarily a migratory bird. Other than a few small resident populations in North Africa, the species winters in the Indian subcontinent and breeds in southeastern Europe and central Asia. They are mostly found in pairs or small groups.
Shelducks inhabit inland waterbodies such as lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. Nesting in cliffs or tree crevices away from water, male and females establish lasting bonds and share the task of rearing their young.
Buddhists consider Ruddy Shelducks sacred in Tibet and Mongolia, where they manage their safety by providing wintering shelters; consequently, their populations are stable and rising. However, populations in Europe are generally declining due hunting and loss of wetlands.
This is a digital creation with elements derived from Winslow Homer’s painting, An Adirondack Lake (1870). Ruddy Shelduck Pair is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 3/19/2023.
