Description
Pheasants were first brought to North America in 1773. However, there was no significant propagation until the early 1800’s. Today pheasants are found in 40 states. For many years, pheasants flourished in the country’s rural landscapes, where small farms provided hay fields and fallow acres, and where hedgerows and stands of trees provided safe cover for the birds. Unfortunately, industrial farming methods are destroying pheasant habitats. Hedgerows are disappearing; weedy cover is burned or sprayed with weed killers. Nests are destroyed by frequent hay mowing and the livestock that overgraze the grasslands. Nevertheless, there is new hope for protecting pheasant habitats. In recent years, wildlife agencies and landowners began creating favorable habitats, giving the birds the seasonal cover that they need for feeding, nesting, and roosting. “Pheasants in the Snow” is a digital painting and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio.
