Description
Though most kinds of pheasants are shy forest birds native to China and East Asia, however the Ring-neck is better adapted to open country. For more than 200 years ring-necked pheasants have been in the United States. They were first brought to North America from Asia in 1773, but they did not begin to propagate until the early 1800’s. These birds are able to thrive during the cold winters in the northern prairies. Winter flocks of these pheasants are often segregate into small groups of males and larger flocks of females. In winter ring-necked pheasants require more food than they do during more temperate seasons, consequently they sometimes need to forage far from safe cover. The arrival of cold and snow is not a death sentence for pheasants. To the contrary, these hardy birds do remarkably well in even tough winters, if there is good winter cover is available. Ring-necked pheasants continue to add to the beauty of the rural landscapes of the United States. “Pheasants by Frozen Lake” is a hand painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 11//17/2021.
